As a Haitian-American playwright and screenwriter, I don’t feel the need to prove my worth, but I recognize that many in my family don’t have that comfort. If harmful stories are told about them, harmful actions will be taken against them. There is an urgent need for Haitian voices to be heard, and for people to see the Haitian experience in all the crowds it encompasses. I am currently in the process of preparing the world premiere of my play Bad Kreyòl, inspired by a trip I took with my father to his homeland a few years ago. While the play is immediately about the troubled relationship between two cousins—one born in Haiti and one born in the United States—it also makes room for larger conversations around the dangerous relationship between Haiti and the United States. My family has not seen the play yet, but my father, who has read all my work, heard a few pages before he passed away. For the first time in my playwriting career, I wrote about his family legacy, and he was very proud.
But then there is danger. There are consequences to misinformation. Just as it is an insult to our dignity to respond to offensive lies, it is also an insult to our lives to let them go unaddressed. We are always on the defensive. Anyone can make up whatever they want, but we are responsible for refuting them. Otherwise, we are more vulnerable to physical attacks and hate crimes. No matter how helpful or beneficial we are to our communities, we can be slandered at any time, and our lives depend on correcting the narrative.
Bad Kreyòl is a deeply personal story, but now, by default, it is also a necessary opportunity to spend time inside the humanity of the Haitian people. I don’t know what my play will and won’t solve. I don’t accept the responsibility of changing minds and hearts and proving the worth of my people. All I know is that theatre provides an opportunity for connection, and if there is ever a national need to find a connection with the real and subtly complex lives of the Haitian people, that time is now.
