Denis Villeneuve's desert-planet blockbuster was so hyped—with a press tour to end all press tours—that it almost came as a surprise when the actual movie, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and more, was actually great. It's epic, mythic, and serious sci-fi, but somehow fast-paced and fun instead of ridiculous; incredibly long but never boring; and packed with enough action and charismatic movie stars that you won't believe your luck. —TA
Out of Darkness is a story of prehistoric survival: Six Paleolithic characters fight a dark force that hunts them as the sun sets. And, like any good late-night movie, it takes no time to get moving. Note that the characters speak an invented language, Tola, designed with the help of an academic consultant and translated via subtitles. But the film is a stylish, breathtaking marvel, shot in the stunning Scottish Highlands in eerie natural light and set to a powerful, pounding soundtrack. It’s more thriller than horror, despite its scenes of intense violence, and when the group plunges into an ancient forest, the Blair Witch vibes completely fall apart. —Taylor Antrim
Rose Glass' follow-up to her riveting horror debut, Saint Maud, is a riveting, riveting lesbian romance set in 1989 New Mexico about a gym manager (played by Kristen Stewart) and an amateur bodybuilder (Katy O'Brien, committed and brilliant) who fall into a torrid, steroid-fueled relationship, causing all sorts of chaos along the way. There are ideas about self-actualization and empowerment here, but there's also plenty of neon-lit body horror. The result is powerful and maybe a little divisive. A topic for conversation. —TA
