The Harris Teeter manager said they could only take credit cards or cash. The kid next to me said it was only $14, and the couple behind me said they only took debit cards, so I told them I would take their place. The store was quiet, neat, well-stocked, and strangely normal. They limited who could come in to a very small number. They had electricity but absolutely no water, no propane, no charcoal, nothing like that. I bought some Powerades. Then I drove around downtown looking for people congregating and finding Wi-Fi. I came to a corner that turned out to be the DHS office, which had the best Wi-Fi signal ever. Now I could actually get some work done. Then I saw my new friend, the emergency contact I had been trying to reach earlier, and we hugged in the middle of the street. He said he got my message but it was a day late. His water tap was completely dry. He ran into some friends who were planning a barbecue. I heard people talking about the press conference the day before and they confirmed that I-26 was open to Charlotte; after all, that was the only way out of Asheville. That told me I could leave tomorrow. I called the airline and the rental car company, my mom and my friends, and I made plans and made them. It was my only option.
Meanwhile, as I announced my plans and signed out for the night, I saw a middle-aged woman slumped over her parked car, vomiting. Her young son was nearby looking at his phone. I went to my car, handed my son my Powerade, and asked if she had any tap water. Not everyone had gotten the warning because there was no service. Some were unaware of the boil-water order. Meanwhile, a pregnant woman was crying on the phone, worried about running out of water. I learned, after visiting the grocery store, that deliveries wouldn’t arrive for days. I had a pot of drinking water left.
A friend texted me a rundown of the news, saying that the town was an isolated island, cut off from any resources or outlets, and that we should be prepared for days before power and water were restored. It seemed reasonable to stock up on groceries and prepare for three to five days. I still had running water in my house, but I had stopped flushing the toilet. I drove around, looking for a grocery store. Trader Joe’s was closed, and I watched a woman try unsuccessfully to negotiate with the workers at the dumpsters to give her the food they were throwing away. I parked there and walked across the street to the only grocery store in town that was still open, Harris Teeter. I waited in line for at least an hour, maybe two. I made friends with some of the people in line, and my dog, a newly certified volunteer therapy dog, gave everyone a kiss. She was happy about it.
