The introduction of nylon in 1940 revolutionized the garment industry, and women flocked to lingerie made with the new synthetic material, which allowed for a wide range of colors and patterns. During World War II, women went to work in factories—and the "torpedo" bra with its pointed cups appeared. These bras were quickly replaced by the "bullet bra" of the 1950s, which had conical cups and was worn by Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, and Lana Turner.
Suddenly, the bra went from undergarment to fashion statement, forever changing the way we think about lingerie to this day. Nowhere is this more evident than at Fredericks of Hollywood, a lingerie store opened by Frederick Mellinger in 1947. With satin and lace linings in bold colors and shapes, these items accentuated women's sensuality. Mellinger also sold the first push-up bra, which he called the "Rising Star" - a nod to the store's location on Hollywood Boulevard and the bra's ability to create a full, uplifting look.
By the 1920s, the bra had replaced the corset as the undergarment of choice for young women—especially those with a feminine style and a slim figure. It wasn’t long before lingerie and underwear manufacturers began adding comfortable elastics to match the vibrant energy of the times. It wasn’t until 1932 that most lingerie designers realized that proper fit could go a long way—that’s when cup, wire, and hook-and-eye sizes were introduced—and A, B, C, and D sizes became the industry standard. Adjustable maternity bras were also introduced in the 1930s.
